Arriving on Hydra
The boat docks at Hydra town, built amphitheatrally around the horseshoe harbour. Hydra is car-free: from the port you go up to the town on foot, by donkey, or by water taxi. There is no bus service up the hill from the harbour.
Getting up from the port
- Walking: the cobbled Vlicla steps and the donkey path climb from the harbour; well marked, 15–30 minutes to the main square.
- Donkey / mule: the traditional short ride up the stone path; agree the price before you board.
- Water taxi: the Port Authority (Hydra coastguard) keeps a list of licensed water-taxi skippers in the harbour; useful for longer hops around the coast and from Metochi.
Practical
You can also reach Hydra from the Peloponnese town of Metochi by the small passenger boats ("freedom" lines), and from Hermione and Ermioni by water taxi — all described on the municipality and port pages.
